A dragonfly takes nectar from common mullein (Verbascum thapsus). Common mullien is not a native plant, but a European import. It grows most in disturbed soils along roads in the sagebrush steep and mountains. It is a biennial of the Figwort family, making a rosette of soft gray leaves the first year and finishing its life cycle during the second growing season with a flowering spike 1 to 2 or more yards tall.
