Common cockleburr is a very widely dispersed plant. The greenish-red stems are spotted. Cocklebur is toxic to livestock, and grows in most disturbed sites. It is an erect plant about 2 to 4 feet tall. The burs are almost like Velcro spines, allowing it to be dispersed easily is animal fur, and referred to by most outdoorsmen as hitchhikers for their ability to cling to shoelaces and socks.
