Box elder is a very fast growing tree that reaches 20 to 60 feet tall. Box elder was commonly planted by the early settlers for the windbreak, and the sap that was made into maple sugar. This elder grows commonly along riverbanks in meadows below the elevation of 6000 feet. Unlike the other elders, box elder is not a very desirable tree for landscaping because of its brittle branches and heavy crop of samaras.
